The mystery bulb is Schizostylis (Hesperantha) coccinea. I have it at work and had no idea what it was, and then happened upon it in Sunset one day....

Buy a car or a computer, and it depreciates. Plant a tree and it generally increases in value over time - if given the right growing conditions and proper care. We do need to invest in trees to get something back - and it needs to be built into the planting budget.

I went with Kori on this tour and would like to add: 1. Kathy and the other Audubon Society members were incredibly safe and conscientious cyclists and 2. The members were very open and sharing with their knowledge. I am by no means a bird expert but no one was condescending.

Birders view the urban world very differently. Where others see a crummy vacant lot filled with trash, they see an uncommon Say's Phoebe in its habitat. "The environment" is not somewhere else, it's all around us. Now if only those dang birds would sit still long enough so we can identify them...

I must say that overall I am really impressed with this blog.It is easy to see that you are impassioned about your writing. I wish I had got your ability to write. I look forward to more updates and will be returning.
