This winter I worked on a website that allows users to identify trees and their locations in their community. The site links two street tree databases for San Francisco and graphically depicts them on a map. Users can also add or update data, so trees in yards, parks or open spaces can be added. The site calculates the ecosystem services offered by the trees - cleaner air and water, just to name a couple. So the more trees in the database, the more services we can see! (We're already feeling their effects).
I helped out with the Tree ID Key and an instructional video on measuring the trunk of a tree. (Knowing the trunk diameter helps us make estimates about its size and age, so we can calculate ecosystem services - it's all in the video!)
Here's a link to two earth day events that debut the site: http://www.earthsite.net/news/urban-forest-map-launch-party/
And soon...www.urbanforestmap.org goes live!
